Sports Journalist and Women’s Sport advocate Sam Squiers has released her debut children’s book Princesses Wear Sneakers which aims to send a powerful message to girls about sport from a key early age.
The book centres around Princess Ellie who loves playing sports and wearing her sneakers. She dreams of playing sports in big stadiums and even competing at the Olympics. The only problem is, nobody seems to think that her sporty interests are very princess-like! When disaster strikes the kingdom, Princess Ellie sets out to prove that princesses definitely wear sneakers.
The heartwarming and uplifting tale sees Princess Ellie challenge the stereotype of a princess, just like women in sport have challenged the stereotype of an athlete.
“Princess Ellie encourages girls to be strong, brave and confident. She shows girls how to believe in yourself and not to let others perceptions of you shape who you are. It shows girls they can be game changers.”
Sam is an award winning sports journalist who has worked with some of Australia’s leading media and sports organisations including Fox Sports, Channel 9, NRL, Surfing Australia, Channel 7, Sky News, Podcast One Australia and Southern Cross Austereo. She is also the founder of Women’s Sports platform Sportette.
But it was the birth of her two daughters Imogen and Elle who were the inspiration behind the novel.
“I searched for a book about girls and sport to read my girls but really struggled to find many. Literature plays a huge role in children’s development and I’ve always felt it’s important to shape relationships with girls and sport early. I felt it was important to write this book for that reason. It’s the book I longed to find in order to read to my own girls,” Squiers said.

The book aims to send powerful messages to little girls about sport from a very early age. It encourages them to not only play sport but to break down barriers and overcome obstacles which may stand in the way as they pursue their dreams.
In 2022, Princesses Wear Sneakers was published in the UK as Princesses Wear Trainers.
