Finally a Commercial About Women in Sport That Gets It

This ad gets it.

This ad moves, motivates, inspires and empowers.

It will give you goosebumps and send a shiver of pride through your body.

This is the best advertisement ever made about women in sport in Australia.

It showcases the best attributes of our female netballers along with the frustrating everyday realities. It doesn’t hide anything, nor gloss over their struggles. In doing so it sends a powerful message about how incredible these women are.

Finally, someone has made a commercial on women in sport that gets it.

Last year, an article by Sportette sparked a huge debate when we questioned a commercial promoting the ANZ Championship. We could see what they were trying to achieve, they wanted to show the girls as tough, but somehow the execution of that aim badly missed the mark and we were left with a strange feeling as the ad was likened to a violence campaign. Sportette argued why the many wonderful attributes of our netballers weren’t showcased in the commercial instead.

They don’t have time for egos nor scandals yet always make the time for future generations

And hats off to Samsung in their campaign…this ad does.

It weaves the story of a young netballer with members of the Australian Diamonds Netball team. She finds motivation in their struggles and successes, looking up to them for inspiration and for hope.

A moving voice over along with beautifully shot scenes are a powerful reminder about what our netballers go through every day.

“If you can rise at five and train till four and still be fresh for the second and third job,” it says.

“If you can be a part of one of Australia’s most successful sporting teams ever and still no one knows your name”

“If you can dedicate your whole life for one thing, for love and not the money or the fame”.

“If you can fight on the court like enemies and walk off best friends”

“and if you can inspire this girl to follow her dreams, then maybe one day you too can call yourself a Diamond”

These women are professional athletes with high expectations yet are on amateur wages and conditions. Netball pays the dreams but not the bills. They combine training with full time work and study. Their motivations for doing so are not for fame or fortune, it’s for the love of the game.

These women encompass the best there is about professional athletes, their motivations are raw, their sportsmanship pure.

And this is the best thing. This ad calls for people to “Rethink Role Models”. These women encompass the best there is about professional athletes, their motivations are raw, their sportsmanship pure. They don’t have time for egos nor scandals yet always make the time for future generations, like the one featured in this ad.

The argument for supporting women in sport is written here in this ad, it’s obvious when you look in this little girl’s eyes. It’s not about broadcast ratings, commercial interests or attendance figures; it’s about this little girl, the next generation. It’s about inspiring and motivating these little girls who will grow up to represent 50% of our population. It’s about giving these little girls the right role models and leaders in sport and in life. This little girl who will grow up to be a woman in sport and a woman of the world.

Prepare for more spine-tingling clips too with Samsung launching a series of individual stories on five of the Diamonds, these will move you and even have you reaching for the tissues!
